Do You Have Leadership Potential?
Written by Alex Marlin on September 23, 2007 – 2:12 am -Do you believe that all leaders are born with this potential, and that leadership potential can be developed?
This has always been a topic that will always create a stir among the so called managers that are managing many of our top companies in the world today. There are many ways to manage and many styles of being a manager. But, what really counts, is when you see a qualified manager that has a a team of sub-ordinates that really produces results.
So managing isn’t really about being the best, it is about being the best at delegating responsibilities to others and getting them to do as much as possible in a timely fashion. Once a manager can get his team motivated enough to produce constant results, then we can speak of a great manager.
Spotting Leadership Potential In Kids
Now, I strongly believe that you can spot leadership potential in any child, and this not to be confused with the “bully” style that many kids have these days. You honestly have to look at how well these youngsters take charge and dictates to their friends, and how many of their friends believes in them and follows and does exactly what they say. It is a atmosphere were the kids are always listening to those particular kids. Seldom do you ever see a child with leadership potential being led, but you will also notice how well these little ones listens.
Will you say that kids can be nurtured and taught how to be better leaders when they are still very young?
A very tricky question and I will say yes, with the help of youth clubs, but I have seen that certain skills can be developed, but for the majority of kids joining the youth groups most just do it to meet with other youth members, but once you see potential amidst certain kids it will be those kids that will shine. My advice is to always have your kids take part in one if not more youth groups. It improves their listening skills and builds more personal traits that will help them be more responsible.
A strange thing among most of the thin and small kids, sometimes even fat kids is that the secluded kids are the ones with the most potential. They are the ones who will focus most of their energy on doing what is best, because of the lack of attention that they are receiving from other members. So the payoff is actually that less attractive kids show much higher leadership potential. Now, I do have to be very careful when stating attractive kids, because I am referring to thin, small and fat kids, and not their looks, just their body structure.
Confusion Between Leadership Potential And Plain Old Bossy Attitude
There is a big difference between a leader and someone with a bossy attitude. A bossy person is someone who thinks that they have leadership potential. They are always dictating how it should be done. They always try to make everyone do things their way, and once it is done differently they get very angry and starts complaining about any and everything they can think of. Their relationships suffers from the same symptoms, they always try to boss around their soul mate.
Leadership Potential:
Traits that show potential leaders:
- The ability to take charge, show that you are willing to make decisions and not sit back and let others make decisions for you
- Stands up for their own mistakes, shows how responsible they are by admitting when they are wrong
- Doesn’t make complaining their hobby, because problem solving is a better solution
- Is tough, but not mean, is determined to make any decision work, is not afraid of being criticized by his peers
- Shows respect and gets respect. A great leader doesn’t care if you like them, but puts respect above everything else
- Power of speech, any leader has to be able to make people listen to them, if you can’t speak then you surely need to improve your speaking skills to be consider for leadership
- The best leaders focus more on doing the right things, confronted with the worse situations and even then will come up with a solution
- Isn’t worried about doing things his way, places more value on getting things done
- Looks for potential in everyone, and tries to bring out the best in them. Doesn’t pay attention to all your flaws and hammers you with detail.
The one minute manager and leadership and the one minute manager are the best books I have read that deals with top management and leadership that can give you a boost and help you to become a better leader and manager.
