What It Feels Like To Be The Boss

Written by Alex Marlin on January 30, 2008 – 4:06 am -

The only way to actually be the boss is when it’s your turn to show your leadership skills and this week was my turn. My boss and my colleague went off Island for three days, and left me in charge. All I can say is being boss is no fun, and then again I have to admit that if you can prove your worth, this is the best chance you get in life.

When they left I assumed everything would go smooth and no problems would arise, but no one prepared me for the most drowsed in worked days that would follow.

Everything that could have gone wrong took place, my phone was like a hot line, anyone working there at that moment would have sworn it was a five star restaurant with many take out orders. And to top that off, one of the CSR’s (Customer Service Reps) took ill, so I was filling his spot also.

You name it, and I did it for those couple of days.

Then when I thought it would get better, I got a couple of calls from some Government officials complaining that there systems went down. I have never created a bridged network before and was wondering how in Gods name will I pull that off. Was shown briefly how to do it.

I stayed calm, and tried to focus, began going through some reading material, they called just around nine that morning, and I did not say I didn’t know what to do. I just told them to have a little patience with me and that I was working alone. A little later I called them up and told them that I needed to rebuild all the bridge connections and I will try and get it done A.S.A.P.

I was really multi-tasking, doing customer outages and reading up on how to rebuild those bridges. I just started creating the bridges on the computer and was trying to figure this out while doing that. At that moment I had no one to turn to, no one to call, it was all up to me, if it had to be.

The only thought that ran through my mind was; So you want to be boss then, well prove it.

The worse part came, when one customer was bombarding one CSR with slander, he called me and asked if I could assist him. When I got there, I shook the gentleman hand and he let me have it. I listened and stayed calm, very calm, I was even amazed at how well I handled the situation. Then I told him what I would do, and he left. I again promised the world.

I got that guy shifted on to a new system, got the field techs to assist, must give thanks to the only female tech we have, she really helped me out. We had this guy strapped and moved in under an hour. I called him and he came and got the new box, he went home and his system was up and running. Later that afternoon I called him. he said all was working.

You know what was so amazing, to see that… no thanks was returned. In life we are eager to condemn, but seldom are we prepared to praise.

I was crunched for time, but I wanted to get this done as soon as possible, those guys kept calling me, and I kept telling them that I was busy repairing the network, not quite true, I was busy learning how to do the impossible. In the mean time I was helping everyone out, no complaints, everyone was getting what they wanted except the Government officials.

The Intern who is training with us was laughing and wondering how I would pull it off, I just went and deleted all the bridges, that left me no choice, and started to recreate them, I finished just 5 minutes shy of twelve.

That was a great feeling, the phone calls didn’t slow down, more problems were being reported, and as they came in I was getting them completed.

I must admit, that for all the years working with this company, these couple of days made me feel I like I worked for a lifetime. I was actually busy for the first time in my life for 8 hours each day.

What did I learn from this experience?

  1. To always stay calm, and test your limits, you will be surprised what you can do when you don’t have anyone around to help you out.
  2. Being the boss takes responsibilities to another level, you have to make decisions and make them fast.
  3. I honestly learned how to motivate and get people to do the impossible, and how to believe in you.
  4. The best compliment I got is when one of the field techs was working on a problem, he called me and briefly discussed the problem. I went to work and called him back and said you can leave now, it’s up and running. He laughed loudly and said, I told the gentleman I gave it to the best, he will make it work for you.
  5. To be the boss, doesn’t mean you have to be a “snob”
  6. Together we can get more done, and I have seen this, when one colleague who had requested to take the afternoon off, insisted that he would stay on to help. It really moved me. It won’t go unforgotten.
  7. Many of the things that employees do go unnoticed

Point seven is my closing point and that is the one I would like to address, because nothing you do goes unnoticed. And when your doing something, do it from your heart, because what you give is what you will get. I know now, that I do give my all and that the people I work with respect that.

I will send an email of gratitude to all who assisted me in getting through these couple of days.

Thanks, I owe you all a bunch…

Before I close I would like to leave you with this: “Our fatigue is often not caused by work, but by worry, frustration and resentment.”

It’s Not About How Hard You Can Hit, It’s About…

Written by Alex Marlin on January 24, 2008 – 4:32 am -

The headline above isn’t one I created, it is one I want to share with you from a good friend of mines. His name is Stephen Pierce, and I was just listening to a great audio he wants me to share with you. I got to be honest he shares many great audios, and I listen when he speaks.

A lot of times, we sit and complain, and when we see someone who is successful, we simple say that they was lucky. But, be honest with yourself for one minute.

Are they really lucky?

To live and become wealthy is simply put impossible without failing and making many, many mistakes. Anyone you see walking the high roads of success has been knocked down many times, and they got back up, and you have to learn that your strength will be tested in life whether your rich or not.

The higher up the rank you are, the harder you will be knocked down, but your mission statement should be that no matter how hard I fall, I will get back up and accomplish or make a better life for myself.

Some of us go through hell, we get the worse things done to us possibly, and keep wondering why, I myself wonders why. You have to realize that your attitude plays a role in the outcome of your life, you have to become stronger and start making decisions on the fly. No sitting around kibbling and complaining and wondering why.

The moral of this story here was to demonstrate that;  “It’s Not About How Hard You Can Hit, It’s About How Hard You Can Get Hit And Keep Pressing Forward!”

Life will throw punches, and the survivors takes those punches, gets back up, dust off, and gets on with their life.

Stop, thinking of all the bad things that has happened to you in your life, stop telling the bad stories, change your outlook, and position yourself for better.

Start talking and dreaming of great things and great things will come into your life.

Many of you will think that the statement I made above is nothing but hogwash, before you do that, just try what I am saying here for one week, and if you can come back to this post and tell me that it didn’t work, that you haven’t been feeling much better and have a greater outlook on life, then…

I will send you one of the best books I have ever read, free of charge on me…

Anyway, I just had to let some steam off there, because I have witnessed this myself, my life was really not going no where, and the moment I stopped focusing on the amount of things that wasn’t working out for me, my life turned around 360 degrees. Yes, I mean that, focus on the good things life has to offer…

With that said, go visit Stephen Pierce and listen to what he has to say, here is the link…

Six Tips That Will Boost Your Brain Power

Written by Alex Marlin on January 4, 2008 – 4:29 am -

Today I would like to help you increase your brain power, the more powerful your brain gets, the better it will help you grasp and comprehend many of the daily activities you will be facing. As you grow older you tend to relax and actually get lazier, your brain is also depleting and falling behind. Just look at a toddler, they are human sponges that do nothing but absorb all day long. They repeat what they hear and look for responses from other folks to determine if it was a good thing or bad. They keep trying and pushing on to learn as much as they can.

But, your not dealing with a kiddo brain here, your dealing with someone who is striving to become a much better person and an individual who will be respected in this society. To be such a person, you will need to increase your brain power and learn many skills that will give you the respect you deserve.

If you wish to comprehend things better, then you will need the skills to master what is being said, and to fully understand what your talking about, your skill level isn’t the only thing people will judge, but also the power of your brain. Don’t get me wrong here, because no human being knows everything, and to master any skill, you first have to admit that you don’t know everything, that will help you to focus and listen with much more tenacity.

Enough said, here are my six tips that will improve your brain power:

  1. Start Reading More Books - I know this is very difficult, but everything that looks difficult is a lack of focus on your behalf. Your brain works like this; If you say you don’t like reading books, then your brain shuts down, and will refuse to excite you when you see a book. Now you know who controls, so all you have to do is to start telling yourself that you love reading books and in no time flat, your brain will accept reading as fun. As of today, each month I will list the book that I am reading, and you can start improving your own mind power by reading the type of books you love. You don’t have to like what I like, just read what you like. I am not referring to those love stories/novels, read something that will help you improve on something, doesn’t matter what, just read a how to book.
  2. Getting A Good Nights Rest - A tired brain just can’t function, so you will have to get enough shut eye, or your brain will be too drained to start thinking or being in a creative mind boosting stage. If you have a hard time falling asleep, then get creative and find something to keep you busy during the day or after work, and make sure your tired before going to bed. Exercise is also a great way to tire out the body, which will relax the muscles and enable you to sleep like a baby. TIP: To fall asleep fast, all you have to do is lye very still in bed, absolutely no movements and your brain would get tired from the inactivity and simply fall a sleep (That my friend is the simple cure for insomnia).
  3. Learning To Focus And Pay Keen Attention - During a conversation with someone you should actually listen and interpret what they are saying, ask specific questions, show you are interested and really listening. If you don’t know what they are speaking of, ask questions, each and every topic can teach you something. Like when you was attending class, there was always that one kid that had this sort of pierced ears that can zoom in on everything that the class teacher was saying. You have to be that type of person and do that with everyone your speaking with. It will improve your conversational skills, boost your brain power and listening skills all in one.
  4. Playing Games - Bet you wasn’t thinking on this one. Game playing is a huge help, it uses a lot of brain cells. You have to focus, use your muscles, your eyes and use your brain. It doesn’t matter what type of games you play, as long as you play. If your not a sport fan, then play simple group games like scrabble, dominoes (that’s my sport, sorry you won’t have a chance), simple hang man games, which I play with my kids and today, the Internet makes it is possible to play many online games that stimulates the brain. Just find some games you love and start playing.
  5. Listen To Audio CD’s - Got to be honest this one is to relax the brain and help you focus. If you want to be a better person, listen to life improvement type audio’s. If your wish is to be a motivational speaker, then go for those types. The choice is yours, and no matter what your choice is, you can find something out there that you will love.
  6. Laugh - I will keep this one short, learn to enjoy life and laugh, be happy. The more you laugh, the more your brain relaxes and that will help with the production of great ideas and better solutions.

As with everything in life, you only get good at what you do often, so don’t think that you can read one book, or listen to one audio and think you will have that mega ton brain. It is repetition, the process of doing and doing some more. That is the only way I know to be great and to have the mind power to keep you focussed and coming up with solutions each and every day.

So for today, go figure and start pushing, you have much to learn, and a book to read. The Book I am reading this month is: “Why we Want You To Be Rich”, by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki.
